Minor Parties Consider Aligning with Current Government Amidst Internal Strife

Reports have emerged suggesting that several minor political parties representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya are contemplating a departure from the coalition to join forces with the ruling government. This revelation has created ripples within the political landscape, according to the Lanka Deepa newspaper.

The current activities and political maneuvers of the main opposition coalition have left its minor partners in a state of anxiety. Frustrations have been voiced regarding key decisions made by the main party, perceived as deviating from the foundational principles and governance agreements that initially brought the coalition together.

Leaders from these minor parties have criticized the major faction's lack of adherence to agreements formed during the coalition's inception. Prominent figures such as Rishad Bathiudeen, Rauff Hakeem, Palani Digambaram, and Mano Ganeshan have openly lamented certain decisions made by the Samagi Jana Sandahanaya, indicating a growing discontent within the group.

Highlighting this internal discord, Rishad Bathiudeen—leader of the All Ceylon Muslim Congress and former minister—delivered a candid statement at a public event in Kurunegala, affirming that he is not beholden to the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. He emphasized that the Samagi party is merely one of many political entities and that he and his allies are not bound members.

A prominent leader from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya defended the coalition's approach, asserting that decisions are consistently made collectively to meet the expectations and aspirations of all allied political parties. He noted that various benefits, including parliamentary positions and privileges, had been rightfully extended to their members based on electoral agreements.

However, the report further reveals that some minor party leaders may be strategizing to support the current government, possibly seeking protection from ongoing legal cases against them in the courts. This potential shift raises questions about the loyalty and future direction of the opposition coalition amid escalating tensions.
