Doctors Set to Protest at Colombo National Hospital Over Ongoing Pay and Resource Crisis

Protests are brewing among Sri Lanka's doctors, who are set to gather outside the Colombo National Hospital on November 10 to voice their dissent against the persistent salary and benefit crisis, exacerbated by a severe shortage of medical professionals and unfulfilled professional demands.

The Government Medical Officers' Association has emphasized that their decision to demonstrate follows a lack of meaningful engagement from authorities despite repeated requests for discussions regarding their grievances. The association expressed disappointment over the silence from officials, prompting the call for action.

Although Sri Lanka has secured relatively higher healthcare indicators compared to neighboring nations, the association highlights that doctors here receive alarmingly low salaries. They point to adverse economic circumstances since 2022, including significant tax levies on medical personnel, the revocation of vehicle tax exemptions, and reductions in benefits during the 2025 state salary revisions, which have inflicted considerable injustice on the medical community. Promises made by the government to restore these benefits once the economy improves remain unfulfilled, according to their statement.

Furthermore, the association reveals that no scientific assessment of approved staff numbers in the health sector has taken place in the past eleven years since 2015. Currently, the number of doctors actively engaged in services has dwindled to below 25,000, contributing to a staffing crisis.

Despite hospitals and care units expanding, the failure to increase staffing levels has directly impacted the quality of patient care, placing excessive burdens on the existing workforce amid a growing demand for healthcare services.

In light of the government's claims of stabilizing the economy, the association submitted proposals in August through the 2027 budget to seek immediate solutions to these pressing issues, but reports indicate that officials have largely ignored these suggestions.

As black armbands marked silent protests outside major hospitals over the past week resulted in no tangible outcomes, doctors are poised to take a stand in Colombo, urging the government to act swiftly and provide just solutions to their longstanding grievances.
