Former Secretary Arrested Over Corruption Allegations in Tenders for Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre
In a significant development, Gamini Kithsiri Dias Amarawardhane, a former secretary of the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade, has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption. He faces serious charges of corruption linked to a tender process for purchasing seats for the Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre in Polgolla, resulting in a financial loss to the government of approximately Rs. 80 million.
According to a special media release issued by the Commission, the arrest took place today following an extensive operation by their investigative officers. This move underscores the agency's ongoing efforts to combat corruption at high levels of government.
The central allegation against the former secretary involves the procurement process for the theatre's seating, during which he purportedly failed to purchase from a private company that had presented the lowest bid. Instead, he conspired to acquire the seats from another private company, raising concerns over the integrity of the tender process.
This decision has reportedly caused a significant financial shortfall for the government's treasury, amounting to Rs. 7,973,114.50, indicating a severe breach of public trust in managing government funds.
Authorities have stated that the arrested former secretary is expected to be presented before the Chief Magistrate's Court in Colombo shortly, as the Commission continues its investigation into the matter.
