Two Schoolchildren Injured in Elephant Attack in Girandurukotte

In a shocking incident in the Maithrigama area of Girandurukotte, a three-wheeler transporting schoolchildren was severely damaged following an assault by a wild elephant. Two children from the same family have been hospitalized with injuries sustained during the attack.

The encounter occurred while the three-wheeler was being driven by the children’s mother, who suddenly found herself in the path of an elephant that charged at the vehicle. The assault resulted in significant damage to the three-wheeler, prompting immediate action to transport the injured children to the nearby Girandurukotte district hospital.

The injured children are siblings residing in the town of Hobariyaawa, in the Jayanthipura area.

Samanta Buddhika Rajapaksha, the principal of Girandurukotte Central College, expressed deep concern over the continuous presence of wild elephants in the vicinity, noting that authorities have been alerted to the situation yet have failed to provide a lasting solution. He highlighted the alarming reality that elephants often roam within the school grounds, especially during morning hours when they are frequently spotted near classrooms.

The principal poignantly warned that if urgent measures are not taken to control the elephant incursions, there remains a grave risk of potentially losing the life of a schoolchild or a teacher before the current elephant season comes to an end.
