Minister Highlights Urgent Need to Combat Youth Substance Abuse at National Youth Sports Festival

The fight against substance abuse, particularly among the youth, stands out as a critical challenge for the Minister of Health and Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. He emphasized the urgent need to safeguard the young population from debilitating diseases and addictive substances such as 'ice' and 'heroin,' stressing a collaborative effort among various ministries and security forces to rescue young individuals from the grips of addiction. According to him, it is the government's responsibility to fill the void in their lives with positive activities and sports.

Dr. Jayatissa made these remarks during the closing ceremony of the 36th National Youth Sports Festival, organized in conjunction with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the National Youth Services Council, and the Sri Lanka Youth Summit.

The event, held under the theme "Empowering Youth, Winning Together," took place at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex, with Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumar Dewage, also in attendance.

Reflecting on the recent economic turmoil and the tainted political culture the country has faced, Dr. Jayatissa noted that the negative international perception of Sri Lanka is coming to an end. He expressed optimism about the nurturing of an environment where the youth can aspire for a better future.

For a nation to progress, it must not only stabilize the economy but also promote growth across all sectors, including sports, arts, science, and technology, the minister asserted.

This year’s festival saw a remarkable turnout of young athletes from rural and regional levels competing across various disciplines. Those who triumphed in their respective events will serve as important representatives for the country, as highlighted by the minister.

Furthermore, the overall championship was clinched by the districts of Gampaha and Kandy, each garnering a score of 130 points, while Galle secured third place with 106 points.

In addition, athletes set impressive new benchmarks, establishing 21 new swimming competition records and 9 additional event records during the festival.
