මෙයට පෙර මෙවැනිම අධික වැසි සහිත කාලගුණ තත්ත්වයෙන් පසු කෙටි කලකින් මධ්‍යම කඳුකරයේ දිගන පල්ලේකැලේ මහියංගනය ආශ්‍රිතව භූ කම්පන තත්ත්ව ඇතිවූ බවද මහාචාර්යවරයා පෙන්වා දුන්නේය.

Potential for Minor Earthquakes in Central Highlands Due to Full Reservoirs

The recent heavy rainfall has led to some of the primary reservoirs in the Central Highlands reaching full capacity, raising concerns about the possibility of minor seismic activity in the region. This insight comes from Professor Athula Senaratne, a distinguished expert in geosciences at the University of Peradeniya.

Reservoirs such as Victoria, Randeniya, Rantembe, Kotmale, Polgolla, Bowathenna, Kassalgama, and Mausakelle are currently showcasing maximum water levels, with some even exceeding their spill thresholds, according to the professor.

Professor Senaratne also highlighted past instances where similar weather conditions, marked by excessive rainfall, have led to short-lived seismic events in areas near the Digana Pallegama region, pointing to a historical precedent for such occurrences.

He emphasized that prolonged retention of water in these reservoirs could intensify pressure on the geological strata beneath the earth's surface, potentially leading to the conditions that might trigger these minor quakes.
