Investigation into Assets of Political Figures Launched
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the assets of Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala and former Minister of Power and Energy Kumar Jayakody, as reported by The Sunday Times.
This broad inquiry has commenced based on several concerning findings revealed during initial asset verifications. The commission is taking steps to probe deeper into these issues.
According to the report, the investigation is particularly focused on discrepancies between the asset declarations previously submitted by the two politicians and the subsequent statements they provided. These inconsistencies have raised questions that warrant further examination.
Initial inquiries revealed that some assets have appreciated significantly in value amidst fluctuations in property prices. However, the emergence of newly disclosed additional assets has prompted the commission to undertake a thorough and detailed investigation to address these anomalies.
The probe was launched following a complaint filed last September by civil activist Jamuni Kamanta Tushar de Silva. This complaint targeted five current cabinet ministers and one deputy minister.
Included among the other ministers highlighted in the complaint are Bimal Ratnayake, Wasantha Samarasinghe, Sunil Handunnetti, and Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa.
The complaint has called for an investigation under the Money Laundering Prevention Act regarding allegations of unlawful asset accumulation. In response, the Bribery Commission has set the investigative process in motion.
