Proposed Electricity Rate Hike for Sri Lanka's Fourth Quarter

The Sri Lanka Public Utilities Commission has proposed an electricity rate increase of 1.46% for the upcoming fourth quarter of this year. This recommendation comes on the heels of a previous suggestion made by the National System Operator of the Ceylon Electricity Board, which called for a more substantial hike of 2.88% for the same period.

After reviewing the calculations from the Ceylon Electricity Board, the Public Utilities Commission opted to amend the proposed rate increase, settling on the lower percentage of 1.46%. This adjustment reflects a careful analysis aimed at easing the financial burden on consumers while addressing the realities of the electricity supply situation.

Before reaching a final decision, a special public consultation session is scheduled for tomorrow (October 4) to gather feedback from relevant stakeholders and electricity consumers. A senior spokesperson for the Public Utilities Commission indicated that insights garnered during this session will be critically evaluated before announcing a final decision regarding the fourth quarter electricity rates.
