Concerns Rise Over Gas Supply Promises from LAUGFS

The assurance from LAUGFS Holdings to continue supplying gas to the domestic market has raised eyebrows as the company has yet to fulfill any of its commitments. Minister of Trade, Commerce, and Food Security, Wasantha Samarasinghe, expressed doubts about the reliability of the upcoming gas shipment expected on November 14.

During a political discussion program on independent television, the minister revealed that a letter had been sent to the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance by the company's Managing Director, who is also the son of the firm's chairman, W.K.H. Wegapitiya, outlining a specific timeline for gas deliveries to the island.

The correspondence indicated that a steady supply of gas would be brought to Sri Lanka, with 3,800 metric tons scheduled for delivery between October 24 and 28, an additional 3,800 metric tons in the first week of November, and another 22,000 metric tons throughout the month followed by a further 22,000 metric tons in December.

However, the minister clarified that this timeline had completely collapsed. "The ship that was supposed to arrive on October 28 did not come. When I inquired, I was told it would come on November 3. That too did not arrive. Now they are saying that the ship will come on November 14. Given the current situation, it is very likely that even this date might not hold true. There is no certainty,” he emphasized.

Despite various statements issued by the company, the minister highlighted the persistent issue of missed deadlines, resulting in significant hardships for the general public. The ongoing failure to adhere to concrete delivery dates has left consumers in a precarious position, increasing their frustrations.
