Fuel Pricing Analysis Reveals Discrepancies in Sri Lanka’s Energy Costs

Recent discussions in society have centered around the fuel price of 481 rupees, a figure that independent research firm Verité Research asserts does not accurately reflect the true landing cost of fuel brought into the country by tankers. This revelation came in light of the price adjustments made in November, which resulted in petrol and diesel still being sold below what the official pricing formula dictates in the local market.

In a detailed clarification regarding this matter, Verité Research emphasized that calculating fuel pricing requires a comprehensive comparison across three key factors: the existing retail market prices, the costs that should be adhered to according to the formula, and relevant taxes and subsidies.

According to the findings, despite the price adjustment made in November, the current market price for 92 octane petrol is 57 rupees lower than the price mandated by the pricing formula. Similarly, the price for diesel is also reported to be 62 rupees below the formula's projected cost, confirming that the government continues to provide subsidies for diesel fuel.

Furthermore, the research highlights that the pricing formula was meticulously designed to cover the total costs associated with the importation and distribution of fuel across the island. Verité Research reiterated that the widely discussed figure of 481 rupees should not be misconstrued as the price at which fuel is unloaded from ships, countering misconceptions held by some sectors of society.
