"දැන් රු. 150 කතාවක් කියනවා නෙ මම කිව්වා කියලා. ඔව්, මම කිව්වා රු. 154කට ආසන්න පිරිවැයක් යනවා, වී කිලෝවක නිෂ්පාදන වියදම ඒ කාලේට අදාළව කියලා.

ඒ වෙනකොට ගෝඨාභය රාජපක්ෂ ජනාධිපති, මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ අගමැති. පොහොර තහනම් කළා. දැන් පොහොර නොමිලේ දුන්නා, 350ට දුන්නා කියන අයම පොහොර තහනම් කළා. 

ඒ කාලේ පොහොර මිටිය රු. 40 000-50 000ට ගියා. ඊට පස්සේ ට්‍රැක්ටර් ගාස්තු එහෙමත් වැඩි වුණා. ඒ එක්කම අස්වැන්න අඩුවුණා. නිෂ්පාදන වියදම ගණන් හැදුවාම 150 පැන්නා. ඒක තමයි අපි එදා කිව්වේ."

Minister Namal Karunaratne Highlights Production Costs of Rice Amid Fertilizer Controversy

During the tenure of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the production cost of rice hit Rs. 154 per kilogram, revealed Minister of Agriculture Namal Karunaratne. His comments come in light of ongoing discussions about the agricultural policies implemented during that time.

"Currently, I’ve mentioned a figure of about Rs. 150, but I indicated that the cost was closer to Rs. 154 per kilogram based on the production expenses of that period," Karunaratne stated.

He noted that at the time, Gotabaya Rajapaksa served as President while Mahinda Rajapaksa was the Prime Minister. A significant decision was made then to ban the import of fertilizers, which had crucial repercussions for farmers.

While some now claim that fertilizers are being provided free or at Rs. 350, it was these same individuals who initially enforced the fertilizer ban, according to him. Karunaratne further explained that during that period, fertilizer prices surged to an alarming Rs. 40,000 to 50,000.

Additionally, rental costs for tractors increased, impacting overall agricultural output. When the calculations for production costs were assessed, they stood at Rs. 150, which was consistent with what we communicated back then," he emphasized.
