ප්‍රමාණවත් අධිකරණ අධීක්ෂණයකින් තොරව සැකකරුවන් දීර්ඝ කාලයක් රඳවා තබා ගැනීමට පවතින ඉඩකඩ මෙන්ම, වධහිංසා පැමිණවීම් සහ අතුරුදන් කිරීම් වැනි සිදුවීම්වලට මෙමගින් මඟ පෑදිය හැකි බවට ද එම කාර්යාලය සිය කණගාටුව පළ කර ඇත.

UN Human Rights Office Raises Concerns Over Proposed Anti-Terrorism Legislation in Sri Lanka

The United Nations Human Rights Office has issued a warning to the Sri Lankan government regarding the proposed new anti-terrorism legislation. It cautions that this draft could exacerbate existing unfavorable conditions outlined in the current law, potentially leading to serious human rights violations.

According to the UN office, the broad and ambiguous definition of "terrorism" included in the new draft could severely restrict fundamental democratic freedoms such as freedom of expression, assembly, and the press. Such limitations pose a serious risk to civil liberties within the nation.

The office expressed its disappointment over the allowance for prolonged detention of suspects without adequate judicial oversight. This could further pave the way for incidents of enforced disappearances and torture, which remain pressing concerns in the context of law enforcement today.

Moreover, they emphasized the necessity for the new legislation to incorporate provisions that acknowledge the validity of exculpatory evidence provided during police custody. Such changes are vital to ensure fairness and transparency in legal proceedings.

It is also highlighted as the government's responsibility to guarantee that occurrences of arbitrary detention and human rights violations seen under the old law do not recur. The UN Human Rights Office called for assurances that human rights standards are maintained within the proposed anti-terrorism framework.
