Global Economic Instability Impacts Sri Lanka's Local Economy, Central Bank Reports
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has indicated that the ongoing geopolitical instability and the sluggish nature of the global economy are exerting significant pressure on the nation's local economy.
According to the bank's weekly economic indicators report, rising inflation, depreciation of the Rupee, and increasing oil prices in international markets pose formidable challenges to the economy.
It is apparent that surging commodity prices globally and persistent disruptions in supply chains are directly influencing the cost of living in the country.
The escalation of oil prices in the world markets, partly attributed to tensions between the U.S. and Iran and attacks on oil tankers in the Red Sea, has been notably sharp. This situation has driven up energy costs domestically and applied intense pressure on foreign exchange reserves.
In light of global economic pressures, the Sri Lankan Rupee has seen a depreciation of 7.8% against the U.S. dollar so far this year. Although export revenues grew by 7.6% in the first five months of 2026, a significant 29% surge in import expenditures has widened the trade deficit to a staggering $4,660.8 million.
Moreover, uncertainty in the global economy has resulted in a slight decline in tourist arrivals, with projections indicating a drop of 1.8% in visits and an 11.8% decrease in tourism revenue by June 2026.
