ආරක්ෂාව තර කිරීම සඳහා අතිරේක පොලිස් කණ්ඩායම් සහ කැරලි මර්දන ඒකක බන්ධනාගාර පරිශ්රයට කැඳවා ඇති බව වාර්තා වේ.
ඇතිවූ නොසන්සුන්තාවයෙන් බන්ධනාගාර නිලධාරින් කිහිපදෙනෙකුට තුවාල සිදු වී ඇතැයි වාර්තා වේ.
රිමාන්ඩ් භාරයේ පසුවන රැඳවියන් සහ දඬුවම් නියම වූ රැඳවියන් පිරිසක් අතර ඊයේ (05) පස්වරුවේ ඇති වූ දරුණු ගැටුමකින් රැඳවියන් දෙදෙනෙකු ජීවිතක්ෂයට පත්ව තිබේ. මෙම සිදුවීමෙන් තවත් රැඳවියන් 38 දෙනෙකු තුවාල ලබා රෝහල්ගත කර ඇති අතර, අද (06) වන විට බන්ධනාගාරය තුළ යළිත් නොසන්සුන්කාරී තත්ත්වයක් හටගෙන ඇති බව වාර්තා වේ.
පොලිසිය සඳහන් කරන පරිදි, ඊයේ පස්වරු 1.00ට පමණ මෙම ගැටුම ආරම්භ වී ඇත්තේ බන්ධනාගාරයේ රිමාන්ඩ් අංශයේ සහ දඬුවම් ලැබූ අංශයේ රැඳවියන් දෙපිරිසක් අතර ඇති වූ බහින්බස් වීමක් දුරදිග යාමෙනි.
පසුව එය පහරදීමක් දක්වා වර්ධනය වී ඇති අතර, එහිදී රැඳවියන් දෙදෙනෙකු බරපතළ තුවාල ලබා මියගොස් ඇත. තුවාල ලැබූ අනෙක් 38 දෙනා මේ වන විට මීගමුව මූලික රෝහලේ ප්රතිකාර ලබමින් පසුවේ.
මීගමුව බන්ධනාගාරය මීට පෙර ද විවිධ අක්රමිකතා, රැඳවියන් අතර පවතින කල්ලි ගැටුම් සහ තහනම් ද්රව්ය ජාවාරම් සම්බන්ධයෙන් දැඩි කතාබහට ලක් වූ ස්ථානයකි. විශේෂයෙන්ම බන්ධනාගාරය තුළ පවතින අධික තදබදය සහ රැඳවියන් වර්ගීකරණය කිරීමේදී පවතින ප්රායෝගික ගැටලු මෙවැනි ප්රචණ්ඩ ක්රියා නිතර ඇති වීමට මූලික හේතුව වී ඇති බව බන්ධනාගාර ආරංචි මාර්ග පෙන්වා දෙයි.
සිද්ධිය සම්බන්ධයෙන් බන්ධනාගාර දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව සහ පොලිසිය මගින් විශේෂ විමර්ශනයක් ආරම්භ කර ඇත.
Violence Erupts Once Again at Prison, Two Inmates Dead
A tense atmosphere has returned to Negambo Prison this morning following serious disturbances that occurred yesterday evening. Reports indicate that additional police units, along with riot control squads, have been deployed to the prison premises to restore order.
Several prison officers have reportedly sustained injuries amidst the unrest. The chaos erupted during a violent clash yesterday afternoon (5th) between two groups of inmates—a mix of remand prisoners and those currently serving sentences—resulting in the tragic deaths of two inmates. In total, 38 others were injured and have since been hospitalized, further escalating the tension within the prison.
According to police accounts, the conflict began around 1:00 PM, following a confrontation between inmates from the remand section and those in the sentenced area. Initially sparked by a verbal altercation, the situation rapidly escalated into a violent exchange.
During the ensuing chaos, two prisoners suffered severe injuries and succumbed to their wounds. The others are currently receiving treatment at the Maggona Base Hospital.
Negambo Prison has previously faced scrutiny over various issues, including inmate overcrowding, persistent clashes among prisoners, and smuggling of contraband. Sources indicate that severe overcrowding and difficulties in classifying inmates have been primary factors contributing to such violent incidents.
In light of these events, the Prison Department and police have initiated a special inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of violence.
