 මීගමුව බන්ධනාගාරය තුළ අද (06) උදෑසන යළිත් හටගත් දරුණු නොසන්සුන්කාරී තත්ත්වය පාලනය කිරීම සඳහා බන්ධනාගාර නිලධාරීන් විසින් අවම බලය භාවිතා කර ඇති බව බන්ධනාගාර කොමසාරිස් (මාධ්‍ය ප්‍රකාශක) ඒ.සී. ගජනායක මහතා පවසයි.

ඊයේ දින ඇති වූ නොසන්සුන්තාව පාලනය කර තිබුණ ද, අද උදෑසන රැඳවියන්ට උදේ ආහාරය ලබා දීමට ගිය අවස්ථාවේදී රැඳවියන් පිරිසක් යළිත් කලහකාරී ලෙස හැසිරී තිබේ. එහිදී ඔවුන් බන්ධනාගාර නිලධාරීන්ට පහර දී ඇති අතර, බන්ධනාගාරයේ ප්‍රධාන දොරටුව කඩා දැමීමට ද උත්සාහ කර ඇත.

මෙම තත්ත්වය පාලනය කිරීමට නිලධාරීන් ගත් උත්සාහයේදී ඇති වූ ගැටුම්වලින් බන්ධනාගාර නිලධාරීන් මෙන්ම රැඳවියන් කිහිපදෙනෙකු ද ජීවිතක්ෂයට පත්ව ඇති බවත් ඔහු පැවසීය.

මේ අතර, කාන්තා අංශයේ රැඳවියන් පිරිසක් ද බන්ධනාගාර වහලය මත නැග විරෝධතාවයක නිරත වෙමින් චෝදනා කර ඇත්තේ රැඳවියන් පිරිසක් මියගොස් ඇති බවත් කුඩා දරුවන්ට ආහාර නොමැති බවත්ය.

කෙසේ වෙතත්, මෙම ගැටුම මත්ද්‍රව්‍ය හා සම්බන්ධ කල්ලි දෙකක් අතර ඇති වූවක් බවත්, එය කාන්තා අංශයට සෘජුව බලපා නොමැති බවත් බන්ධනාගාර බලධාරීන් පෙන්වා දෙයි.

Chaos Erupts at Negambo Prison Amidst Ongoing Tensions

Nigambo Prison has once again descended into chaos this morning (6th), as prison officials deployed minimal force to manage a volatile situation, according to the Prison Commissioner (Media Spokesperson) A.C. Gajanayaka.

After successfully restoring order from disturbances yesterday, a fresh outbreak of unrest occurred during the distribution of breakfast to inmates this morning. During this incident, several detainees acted aggressively towards prison staff, even attempting to breach the main entrance of the facility.

The efforts to control the situation have reportedly resulted in conflicts, leading to multiple casualties among both prison personnel and inmates, Gajanayaka disclosed.

Injured staff members and several inmates have since been hospitalized. He further noted that while the immediate vicinity of the prison's main entrance is now under control, a tense atmosphere still lingers within the institution.

Simultaneously, a group of female inmates has staged a protest atop the prison roof, alleging that several inmates have died and that young children are going without food.

However, prison authorities clarified that this unrest stems from an altercation between two drug-related factions and does not directly impact the women's section.

The current inmate population at Nigambo Prison exceeds 2,400, far exceeding its official capacity. In response to the ongoing situation, arrangements are being made to transfer some detainees to other correctional facilities across the country, including Dumbar.
