විනිසුරුවන්ගේ විශ්‍රාම වයස දීර්ඝ කිරීම සඳහා රජය ගෙන ඒමට සූදානම් වන පනත් කෙටුම්පතට ජනාධිපති නීතීඥ එම්.ඒ. සුමන්තිරන් මහතා සිය විරෝධය පළ කරයි.

කොළඹ පැවැති මාධ්‍ය හමුවකට එක්වෙමින් ඒ මහතා අවධාරණය කළේ, මෙම පනත් කෙටුම්පත පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට ඉදිරිපත් කරන්නේ නම් අධිකරණ අමාත්‍ය හර්ෂණ නානායක්කාර මහතා ශ්‍රී ලංකා නීතීඥ සංගමයේ සාමාජිකත්වයෙන් ඉල්ලා අස්විය යුතු බවයි.

වැඩිදුරටත් අදහස් දැක්වූ සුමන්තිරන් මහතා පෙන්වා දුන්නේ ජාතික ජන බලවේගයේ ප්‍රතිපත්ති ප්‍රකාශය තුළ විනිසුරුවන්ගේ විශ්‍රාම වයස දීර්ඝ කිරීම පිළිබඳව කිසිදු සඳහනක් නොමැති බවයි.

"එම ප්‍රතිපත්ති ප්‍රකාශයේ විධායක ජනාධිපති ක්‍රමය අහෝසි කිරීම ගැන සඳහන් වෙනවා. එය ජනතා විමුක්ති පෙරමුණේ දීර්ඝකාලීන ප්‍රතිපත්තියක්. නමුත් විනිසුරුවන්ගේ විශ්‍රාම වයස වැඩිකිරීම ගැන එහි කොහේවත් නැහැ," යැයි ඔහු පැවසීය.

අධිකරණ අමාත්‍යවරයා ශ්‍රී ලංකා නීතීඥ සංගමයේ ජීවිත කාලීන සාමාජිකයෙකු බව සිහිපත් කළ සුමන්තිරන් මහතා, අධිකරණයේ ස්වාධීනත්වයට බාධා පමුණුවන සහ අධිකරණය අත්පත් කර ගැනීමේ අරමුණින් යුතුව මෙවැනි පනතක් ඉදිරිපත් කිරීම නීති වෘත්තිකයෙකු ලෙස ඔහුට නොගැලපෙන ක්‍රියාවක් බව ද සඳහන් කළේය.

අධිකරණ අමාත්‍යවරයා පසුගියදා පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේදී විශ්වාසභංග යෝජනාවකින් ජයග්‍රහණය කළ ද, මෙවැනි පනත් කෙටුම්පතක් ගෙන එන්නේ නම් ඔහු සිය ධුරයෙන් ද ඉල්ලා අස්විය යුතු බව සුමන්තිරන් මහතා මෙහිදී වැඩිදුරටත් අවධාරණය කළේය.

Opposition to Proposed Increase in Retirement Age for Judges Stated by President's Counsel M.A. Sumandiran

In a strong rebuttal of the government's impending bill to extend the retirement age for judges, President's Counsel M.A. Sumandiran has voiced his concerns about the implications of such a move. Speaking at a media briefing in Colombo, he underscored the necessity for the country’s Justice Minister, Harshana Rajakaruna, to resign from the Sri Lanka Bar Association if he plans to present this legislation to Parliament.

Sumandiran further elaborated that the policy statement issued by the National People's Power coalition makes no reference to extending the retirement age for judges. "While the statement includes a mention of abolishing the executive presidency—a long-standing policy of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna—there is no mention whatsoever regarding the retirement age of judges," he emphasized.

Recalling that the Justice Minister is a lifetime member of the Sri Lanka Bar Association, Sumandiran asserted that introducing such a bill undermines the independence of the judiciary and constitutes a conflict for a legal professional. He firmly stated that the proposed legislation would be inappropriate for someone holding such an esteemed position.

Despite securing a victory through a confidence vote in Parliament recently, Sumandiran reiterated the need for the Minister to resign if he were to pursue this legislative path, a point he stressed during his remarks.
