Sri Lanka Emerging as Hub for Asian Crime Syndicates

Sri Lanka, particularly the port city of Colombo, has reportedly become a new focal point for Asian crime syndicates, including those expelled from countries like the Philippines and Cambodia, as revealed by The Island newspaper.

According to the report, thousands of individuals from countries such as China, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Cambodia are residing in Sri Lanka with valid visas, some even clandestinely engaging in criminal activities. These groups leverage social media platforms like TikTok, Telegram, and Facebook for recruitment, offering enticing salaries ranging from $1,200 to $2,000, along with luxurious accommodations and meals.

Many of these operations closely resemble the banned Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), disguising themselves as Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) establishments within Sri Lanka. Aside from online gambling, these syndicates are reportedly involved in financial scams, hacking attacks, money laundering, and human trafficking. Furthermore, the frequent use of cryptocurrencies for transaction purposes has been noted.

The recent kidnapping and murder of a Chinese national in the port city has raised serious concerns regarding the functionality of these criminal networks. Reports indicate that with the influx of foreigners, rental prices for luxurious homes in areas such as Kollupitiya and Bambalapitiya have risen dramatically. Alarmingly, these traffickers have also begun recruiting local Sri Lankans, highlighting a growing risk of youth becoming involved in cyber crimes.

The government is taking this situation seriously, with the Ministry of Digital Economy recently taking action by suspending 122 illegal websites targeted at Sri Lankan users last week. Digital Economy Deputy Minister Eranga Weerarathna announced that discussions are underway to establish a new authority to regulate online gambling and to collaborate with countries like Thailand and Cambodia to combat transnational crime.

Additionally, there are reports that Sri Lankans who were involved in similar syndicates in Cambodia are providing technological support to these crime networks, posing a significant threat not only to national security but also to the country's financial systems, as highlighted by The Island.
