Government's Decision to Extend Retirement Age for Judges Receives Support from Religious Leaders

The decision by the government to extend the retirement age for judges has garnered the support and blessings of senior religious leaders, according to Health and Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.

In comments to the media, the minister revealed that he and Minister Harsha de Silva clarified details regarding this matter during a discussion with prominent clerics, following a letter directed to the President from these religious figures.

Following this dialogue, the clerics expressed their endorsement of the government's initiative, as noted by the minister.

He emphasized that the primary goal of this decision is to reduce delays within the judicial system and enhance its efficiency.

While some groups have registered opposition to this move, driven by political motives or misunderstanding, the minister underscored that the government’s actions are oriented towards the greater good of the entire populace.

Additionally, challenging claims that the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution would undermine the independence of the judiciary, the minister called for clarity from those opposing it on how exactly this would occur.

He further asserted that the government consistently operates with transparency in all its dealings.
