ලබන මාසයේ ජිනීවා නුවරදී ආරම්භ වීමට නියමිත එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ මානව හිමිකම් කවුන්සිලයේ 63 වැනි සැසිවාරයේදී, මෙරට බන්ධනාගාර තුළ මෑතකදී ඇති වූ නොසන්සුන්කාරී තත්ත්වයන් පිළිබඳව විශේෂ අවධානයක් යොමු කිරීමට නියමිත බව Sunday Times පුවත්පත වාර්තා කරයි.

ත්‍රස්තවාදය වැළැක්වීමේ පනත අහෝසි කිරීම ප්‍රමාද වීම සම්බන්ධයෙන් ද මෙහිදී සාකච්ඡා කෙරෙනු ඇත. එහිදී ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ප්‍රතිසන්ධානය, වගවීම සහ මානව හිමිකම්වල ප්‍රගතිය පිළිබඳ යාවත්කාලීන කරන ලද ලිඛිත වාර්තාවක් මානව හිමිකම් පිළිබඳ මහ කොමසාරිස් කාර්යාලය විසින් ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමට නියමිතය. 

මානව හිමිකම් ප්‍රවර්ධනය සහ වගවීම සම්බන්ධයෙන් රජය ලබා ඇති ප්‍රගතිය පිළිබඳ ප්‍රතිචාරය ජිනීවාහි එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා නිත්‍ය නියෝජිතවරයා විසින් එහිදී ඉදිරිපත් කරනු ඇත.

මේ පිළිබඳව අදහස් දක්වන විදේශ කටයුතු අමාත්‍ය විජිත හේරත් මහතා සඳහන් කළේ, එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ සංවිධානය මතු කළ කරුණු රැසකට රජය මේ වන විටත් විසඳුම් ලබා දී ඇති බවයි. අතුරුදන් වූවන් පිළිබඳ කාර්යාලය සහ හානි පූර්ණ කාර්යාලය ශක්තිමත් කර ඇති අතර, ජාති, ආගම් හෝ වෙනත් භේද මත පදනම්ව සිදුවන වෙනස්කම් අවම කිරීමට රජය පියවර ගෙන ඇති බව ද අමාත්‍යවරයා පැවසීය.

මේ අතර, විදේශ අමාත්‍ය විජිත හේරත් මහතා ලබන මාසයේ නිව්යෝර්ක් නුවර පැවැත්වෙන එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ මහා මණ්ඩලයේ වාර්ෂික සැසිවාරයට ද සහභාගී වීමට නියමිතය. සැප්තැම්බර් 22 සිට 28 දක්වා පැවැත්වෙන මෙම ඉහළ පෙළේ සැසිවාරයේදී සැප්තැම්බර් 26 වැනිදා අමාත්‍යවරයා මහා මණ්ඩලය ඇමතීමට නියමිතව ඇත.

මෙම සැසිවාරය එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ සංවිධානයට ඉතා වැදගත් වන්නේ වත්මන් මහලේකම් ඇන්ටෝනියෝ ගුටරෙස් මහතාගේ ධුර කාලය දෙසැම්බර් 31 වැනිදායින් අවසන් වන බැවිනි.

මීළඟ මහලේකම්වරයා තෝරා ගැනීමේ ක්‍රියාවලිය මේ වන විටත් ආරම්භ වී ඇති අතර, ඒ සඳහා චිලී රාජ්‍යයේ හිටපු ජනාධිපතිනී මිෂෙල් බැචලට්, කොස්ටාරිකාවේ හිටපු උප ජනාධිපතිනී රෙබෙකා ග්‍රින්ස්පන් ඇතුළු ජාත්‍යන්තර දේශපාලන නායකයන් කිහිප දෙනෙකුම අපේක්ෂකත්වයට ඉදිරිපත්ව සිටිති.

UN Human Rights Council Session to Address Sri Lanka's Recent Prison Conditions

Next month in Geneva, the 63rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council is poised to spotlight alarming situations within Sri Lankan prisons, as reported by the Sunday Times.

Discussions will also revolve around the delayed repeal of the Anti-Terrorism Act. During the session, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights will present an updated written report concerning Sri Lanka’s reconciliation, accountability, and advancement in human rights.

The Sri Lankan Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva is expected to respond to queries regarding the government’s progress on human rights promotion and accountability.

Foreign Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe emphasized that the government has already addressed numerous issues raised by the UN. He noted that the Office of the Missing Persons and the Office of Reparations have been strengthened, and measures have been taken to minimize incidents based on ethnicity, religion, or other divisions.

Additionally, Minister Rajapakshe is scheduled to participate in the UN General Assembly's annual session in New York next month. He is set to address the Assembly on September 26 during the high-level meeting taking place from September 22 to 28.

This session holds significant importance for the United Nations, as it coincides with the tenure of current Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, which ends on December 31. The selection process for the next Secretary-General has already commenced, with several international political leaders vying for the position, including former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and former Costa Rican Vice President Rebeca Grynspan.
