International Conference on Agriculture and Environment Kicks Off at Ruhuna University

The "International Conference on Agriculture and Environment" (ISAE 2026), organized by the Faculty of Agriculture at Ruhuna University, took place at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo, marking a significant milestone in the integration of modern technology into Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector.

Recognized as a pivotal starting point for the digitization of agriculture in Sri Lanka, the conference aims to facilitate the adoption of contemporary technology within the industry. Its primary objective is to foster a scholarly dialogue that advances the incorporation of innovative technologies into Sri Lankan agriculture.

This gathering, uniting representatives from the public sector, science and technology fields, universities, research institutions, and private sector stakeholders, is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of agriculture in Sri Lanka. It reflects a collective effort to address and overcome current challenges faced by the industry.

A key focus of the discussions was on existing agricultural challenges, the role of modern technology, and the strategic directions that should be pursued in the future. This high-level dialogue facilitated a robust exchange of ideas and strategies among experts.

Notable participants included Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Krishantha Abeysekera, alongside leading academics, researchers, and other intellectuals connected to the agricultural sector. Their presence underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing the agricultural landscape.

In remarks made during the session, K.D. Lal Kantha, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land, and Irrigation, emphasized the necessity for practical transformation within the agricultural sector. He highlighted the importance of scientific methodologies for efficient water management and the precise utilization of fertilizers to optimize crop growth.

“We must move towards a scientific approach that ensures crops receive the right amount of nutrients at the right time, leveraging discussion not just as a theoretical exercise, but as a foundation for actionable projects that bring together the government, private sector, and academic institutions,” he stated.

The focus on the advancement of fourth-generation fertilization technologies within the Department of Agriculture was also discussed, with a call for comprehensive solutions that are best suited to the country’s needs. Lal Kantha committed to providing the necessary legal and policy support to implement these solutions effectively.

“It is natural for there to be differing opinions and debates regarding fertilizers, as the best innovations arise from such discussions. I would like to express my gratitude for the assistance shown by the private sector during the recent fertilizer crisis, where they contributed 65% of their fertilizers to the government,” he concluded.
