Residents Protest Against Temporary Land Lease for Organic Strawberry Farming in Hatten Ruwanpura
Residents of Hatten Ruwanpura have voiced strong opposition to a temporary five-year lease granted by the Land Reclamation Commission for five acres of land designated for organic strawberry cultivation. The locals are concerned about the impact of this decision on their community.
During the establishment of their village, the Land Reclamation Commission had allocated a wetland area to ensure a clean drinking water supply. It is alleged that the commission has now permitted a private company to utilize this crucial wetland area for the strawberry farm, raising alarm among local residents.
This land was originally designated as part of a resettlement initiative following the completion of the Kaduwela Mahaweli Project, which led to the construction of the Kotmale Reservoir approximately forty years ago. The resettlement process granted three acres of land to affected individuals, who have since taken up vegetable farming in Hatten Ruwanpura, with many local families engaging in this agricultural pursuit for generations.
To address the concerns, Manjula Surawira, the Chairman of the Nuwara Eliya District Development Committee and a Member of Parliament, visited the area to assess the situation. He directed the Land Reclamation Commission to remove the lease on the land serving the water source and explore alternative land options nearby for the strawberry project.
Additionally, Surawira has instructed that apart from the land set aside for the water source, a piece of land should be allocated to ensure the livelihood of the third generation of residents living in Hatten Ruwanpura, who currently have no land for agricultural purposes. Furthermore, he called for five acres from the remaining land to be made available for strawberry farming, emphasizing the importance of local agricultural sustainability.
