Government Allocates Rs. 4.1 Billion for Fuel Subsidies Amid Economic Challenges

In a strategic move to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices, the Sri Lankan government has set aside Rs. 4.1 billion for fuel subsidies over the next three months. This decision follows the submission of a detailed cabinet paper to the ministerial council.

However, the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and unfavorable market trends have raised concerns among economic analysts, who caution that escalating fuel prices could pose severe ramifications for the country's economy.

Notably, economist Dhananath Fernando highlights that allocating such a substantial amount for subsidies could yield adverse effects on the national economy. He underscores that this strategy may involve sourcing funds from other sectors, potentially leading to further increases in fuel consumption instead of curbing it.

Fernando warns of a significant risk associated with further depreciation of the rupee as well as the potential depletion of foreign reserves. Moreover, he asserts that this situation could jeopardize existing agreements with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Although the funding decision may not be popular, he posits that allowing the rupee to fluctuate or utilizing reserves might be less practical than adjusting local fuel prices in accordance with global market conditions.

Fernando further argues that broad subsidies on fuel primarily benefit the wealthy. He advocates for more targeted financial assistance aimed at public transportation and low-income communities requiring genuine support, suggesting that this approach would safeguard government funds while providing greater benefits to the underprivileged.
