Sri Lanka Faces Risk of Losing Access to Vital Vaccines Following World Bank Reclassification

The World Bank's recent reclassification of Sri Lanka as an "upper middle-income country" has sparked concerns about the nation potentially losing access to essential vaccination supplies, previously obtained either for free or at subsidized rates.

This classification change means that starting next year, Sri Lanka will have to bear a portion of the costs for its national vaccination program. Reports indicate that by 2028, the government will be responsible for the entire vaccination expenditure.

The Gavi Vaccine Alliance, a global partnership involving the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the World Bank, typically provides vaccines to low-income countries. However, this support is generally limited to nations with a per capita income of less than $2,300, a threshold that Sri Lanka has now surpassed, leading to concerns about losing this crucial aid.

In 2019, Sri Lanka was previously classified as an upper middle-income nation and lost this support. However, in response to the subsequent economic crisis, Gavi implemented special programs to reinstate assistance. Essential vaccines, including those for hepatitis B, pentavalent, polio, and human papillomavirus (HPV), were provided under this aid.

Going forward, the government anticipates establishing new partnerships with the United Nations Development Program to enhance the efficiency and rapidity of the vaccine supply process, as indicated by further reports.
