Long Lines at Fuel Stations as Price Hike Rumors Circulate
As rumors swirl about an impending increase in fuel prices due to monthly adjustments, long queues have formed at fuel stations across various regions of the country. Customers anxiously seeking diesel have resulted in congested lines, reflecting the growing public concern.
Some consumers claim that certain fuel stations are intentionally slowing the release of fuel in anticipation of greater profits following the price adjustments. This has fueled frustration among those trying to secure their supply.
However, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, the government’s Cabinet Media Spokesperson and Minister of Health and Mass Media, reassured the public that there is no issue with fuel imports in the country, emphasizing that there is no necessity for such panic buying.
During a media briefing on Cabinet decisions, the minister revealed that the current fuel subsidy allocated by the Treasury exclusively targets diesel and does not extend to petrol. This aims to alleviate the financial strain on citizens who are struggling due to the rising global oil prices amidst a tumultuous geopolitical climate.
The government has decided to provide a relief package amounting to 4.1 billion Sri Lankan rupees (approximately 41 million USD) for auto and industrial diesel sales. This plan received the Cabinet’s approval, presented by the President in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development. The relief funds will be disbursed under monthly limits.
Despite the necessity for fuel price increases in the local market due to recent global trends, the government has taken measures to mitigate the impact, absorbing much of the cost, according to the minister. He indicated that nearly 100 billion rupees have already been spent on fuel subsidies over the past six months alone.
In response to questions from journalists about why the government is not reducing fuel taxes, the minister clarified that what is provided as a subsidy is derived from the revenue collected through these taxes. Furthermore, he emphasized that the income generated from fuel sales is crucial for managing the country's debt, ensuring that the government is acting in the best interest of the citizens while pursuing its debt obligations.
