Standard Chartered CEO Highlights Economic Benefits of Post-2027 SBA for Sri Lanka

The Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Sri Lanka, B. Thavarathn, emphasized the significant advantages that entering into a "Post-Program Monitoring Stand-By Arrangement" (SBA) with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) could bring to the country’s economic future after the current Extended Fund Facility concludes in 2027.

Speaking at a webinar titled “Global & Sri Lanka Economic Outlook for H2-2026” organized by Standard Chartered Bank, Thavarathn outlined how this new agreement could strengthen financial discipline within the nation. He pointed out that it would facilitate the implementation of pricing formulas that reflect energy costs, enhance foreign exchange management, and solidify the independence of the Central Bank.

Thavarathn highlighted that such a post-SBA arrangement would be crucial in tackling challenges like poverty alleviation, supporting small and medium enterprises, and attracting foreign direct investments. He believes that this strategy would not only safeguard the ongoing economic reforms but also help regain the trust of international investors and rating agencies.

Furthermore, he suggested that adopting this framework would provide greater flexibility in crafting economic policies, thereby paving the way for Sri Lanka to reintegrate into the global financial markets.
