Date Set for Hearing in Shashi Weerawansa's Passport Case

Colombo's Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama has postponed the sentencing of Shashi Weerawansa until the 26th of this month, amid allegations of possessing an irregular state diplomatic passport.

Weerawansa previously received a two-year prison sentence and a fine of one million rupees from the Colombo Magistrate's Court on May 27, 2022, for providing false information to obtain the state diplomatic passport.

If she fails to pay the imposed fine, she faces an additional six-month prison term. This verdict was upheld by the Colombo High Court on June 11, 2026.

Challenging the High Court's decision, Weerawansa's lawyer submitted an appeal to the Supreme Court. The case was examined today; thus, the attorney requested a new date from the Magistrate's Court on behalf of their client.

Taking the arguments into consideration, the Chief Magistrate agreed to postpone the hearing until the 26th and instructed the defense to submit any relevant records pertaining to the case to the court by that date.
