Former Governor Questions Presidential Office's Budget Allocation Amidst Growing Government Expenditures
In a revealing media briefing held in Colombo, former provincial governor Rajitha Keerthi Tennakoon disclosed that the new budget proposal allocates a staggering 11.2 billion rupees to the Presidential Office. This figure, he noted, translates to a daily expenditure of approximately 307,000 rupees.
Examining recent governmental budget estimates, Tennakoon highlighted that the total government expenditure is projected at 9,920 billion rupees. Alarmingly, he indicated that nearly 4,820 billion rupees—equal to 49% of the total budget—will be devoted solely to servicing debts and their associated interest repayments.
Furthermore, 26.6% of the overall expenditure is earmarked for ministries directly under the President's jurisdiction, which he deemed concerning. The breakdown of these costs is as follows:
Ministry of Finance: 858 billion rupees
Ministry of Defence: 458 billion rupees
Ministry of Digital Technology: 17 billion rupees
Presidential Office: 11.2 billion rupees
Diving deeper into the implications of the allocation to the Presidential Office, Tennakoon calculated that dividing the 11.2 billion rupees by 365 days results in the aforementioned daily expenditure. He drew parallels to the previous administrative expenses of 2.6 billion rupees claimed by Anura Kumara Dissanayake while in opposition, highlighting the stark increase in spending since then.
He sharply criticized current leaders for dramatically escalating expenditures, which he believes were previously dismissed by the same officials as excessive and wasteful when they were in the opposition.
Moreover, Tennakoon accused the government of labeling all dissent against such exorbitant spending and actions as "organized criminals" or "terrorists." He asserted that these tactics aim to suppress critiques and limit the flow of truthful information among the populace.
Emphasizing the urgency of protecting democracy, he asserted that such authoritarian measures must be challenged to preserve fundamental freedoms and democratic principles.
