Parliamentary Discrepancies on Sri Lanka's Dog Population Highlighted in Recent Debate

In a revealing exchange in Sri Lanka's Parliament, conflicting statistics regarding the country's dog population emerged from two government ministers, showcasing a growing concern for stray animals.

Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratna estimated the current stray dog population to be around 3.2 million, emphasizing that this figure represents a significant problem. He pointed out that a registration process for stray dogs is already in place, which incurs certain fees, and stressed the need for strict penalties against individuals who abandon pets on public roads.

Highlighting the urgency of the issue, the Deputy Minister urged the authorities to identify those who abandon dogs and puppies near places such as temples, railway stations, and bus stops, insisting that they must face substantial fines.

In contrast, Minister of Health Dr. Krishantha Abeysekara presented a different perspective, suggesting that the total stray dog population in the country is closer to 200,000. He noted that such a population must be managed effectively to ensure public health and safety.
