Sri Lanka's Economic Growth Set to Slow Amid Global Turmoil and Rising Fuel Prices

The political and environmental turbulence in the Middle East, coupled with escalating fuel prices, is casting a shadow over Sri Lanka's economic activities. Reports indicate that the country's economic growth is trending sluggishly compared to the previous two years.

After grappling with an unprecedented economic crisis in 2022, Sri Lanka is in the process of recovery. The economy, which had contracted the previous year, has shown promise with predictions of a 5% growth for both 2023 and 2024.

However, the ongoing instability in the region is expected to exert downward pressure on this growth rate. Key indicators suggest that, during the second quarter of this year, economic growth has dipped to 4.2%, marking the lowest growth figure reported over the past eight quarters.

Despite this, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, expressed confidence that the overall growth for the year would surpass 4%. In a recent media briefing, he noted, “While it may be premature to declare a precise figure, based on current economic activities and indicators, we expect the growth trajectory in the latter half of the year to remain above 4%.” He added that although the growth in the first half seemed poised to exceed 4%, further evaluations would be necessary to finalize the annual forecast.

Earlier this year, the Central Bank published its policy framework, in which Governor Weerasinghe indicated an anticipated economic growth range of 4% to 5% for Sri Lanka.

Furthermore, while consumption has decreased due to stringent monetary policies and rising commodity prices, Deputy Finance Minister Anil Jayatissa Perera stated in June that the country is still hopeful of achieving a 5% economic growth this year.

Commenting on the government’s projections, the Central Bank Governor noted, “The government’s forecast reflects their own assessments. For us, the International Monetary Fund has projected a growth rate of 3.5%. The government is unified in their outlook, while the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank have also provided their projections based on their assessments. Our comments will focus solely on our forecasts.”
