Parliamentary Discussions on No-Confidence Motion Against Speaker Jagath Wickramaaratchi Scheduled Amid His Overseas Trips
The date for parliamentary discussions on the no-confidence motion proposed against Speaker Jagath Wickramaaratchi has been set to take place shortly. However, the Speaker has been out of the country, engaged in two separate international trips.
Upon returning from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) annual conference in Tanzania, Wickramaaratchi immediately departed for Brazil to attend a meeting of international parliamentary representatives.
Reports indicate that Deputy Minister Nishantha Jayawera, who was initially scheduled to join this trip, faced delays in obtaining his visa, leading to his later departure.
Meanwhile, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party has strongly criticized the Speaker's activities. They formally submitted the no-confidence motion, containing the highest number of accusations ever recorded against a Speaker in Sri Lankan parliamentary history, to the Parliament Secretary General, legal expert Kushani Rohandheera.
The motion is set to be discussed during the upcoming parliamentary week, where further scheduling and timelines related to the motion will be finalized during a meeting of the Parliamentary Affairs Committee on the 16th.
This particular no-confidence proposal, consisting of 50 charges that include allegations of financial irregularities and corruption, marks a significant political event, with requests for support from other political parties represented in Parliament.
