Police Address Misleading Claims Surrounding Colombo Protest Incident
The Sri Lanka Police have issued a statement clarifying that a video circulating on social media, which allegedly shows an individual assaulted for aiding a protest march from Kandy to Colombo, is entirely misleading and erroneous. Investigations indicate that the footage is connected to a separate altercation that arose between two people on the street, rather than being related to the protest.
According to police reports, a video released by a prominent social media personality from Kithulgala suggested that a helper affiliated with the protest was attacked with a helmet. However, initial inquiries conducted by the Wiragula Police Station revealed that the individual targeted in this incident had no association with the protest at all.
The victim of the assault was reportedly traveling in a lorry for personal reasons when he found himself caught in a traffic jam outside the Devalaya in the Wiragula Police Division. During this situation, a motorcyclist struck him with a helmet, leading to an escalation of the conflict that resulted in injuries to the motorcyclist. He is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Gampaha.
Witnesses, including local monks who arrived at the scene, noted the injuries suffered by the lorry driver and indicated that he was simply a bystander, not a participant in the protest, further discrediting the narrative suggested in the video.
The police emphasized the potential dangers of spreading false and unverified information on social media, particularly when it can incite public unrest or confusion. They have assured that the case will be formally reported to the courts, and strict legal action will be taken against any individuals responsible for the dissemination of misleading claims.
The Sri Lanka Police urge the public to exercise caution and critical thinking when consuming information shared on social media channels to prevent further misunderstandings and unrest.
