Government Allocates Rs. 500 Billion for Infrastructure Reconstruction Without Foreign Loans

The Sri Lankan government has secured the ability to allocate Rs. 500 billion for the reconstruction of infrastructure devastated by natural disasters, free from dependency on foreign loans. This announcement was made by the Minister of Labour and State Minister of Finance, Anil Jayatissa.

During a recent conference, Minister Jayatissa highlighted the significant challenge of rebuilding a country with a shattered economy, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating resilience in the face of unexpected hurdles.

He further elaborated on the prevailing challenges the country faces and the complexities of economic management, stating, "Poverty in our country is a deeply entrenched problem that requires strategic, long-term initiatives to address. After a natural disaster like the 'Diththa' cyclone, we've managed to set aside Rs. 500 billion for reconstruction without resorting to external loans, which is a commendable achievement for a country that has faced such turmoil."

Jayatissa continued by drawing attention to the broader implications of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have led to soaring oil prices and increased transportation costs, thereby inflating the prices of imported goods. He acknowledged the external pressures on the economy and the exchange rate, but expressed optimism, asserting, "Despite these external pressures, we have created a favorable environment for sustained economic growth that allows us to move forward together."
