Innovative Solutions Discussed at Nuwara Eliya District Agricultural Development Committee Meeting
The Nuwara Eliya District Agricultural Development Committee gathered recently to address pressing agricultural challenges facing the region, as reported by its chairman and Member of Parliament, Ranjith Wijeratne.
During the meeting held on the 13th at the Secretary's Office in Nuwara Eliya, Wijeratne emphasized the collaboration among officials from all relevant state institutions, including agriculture, lands, irrigation, livestock, and the Ministry of Mahaweli Development. This collective effort aimed to engage on a wide array of pressing issues affecting the district's agriculture sector.
He remarked, “The discussions were highly productive. We managed to provide feasible solutions to many of the challenges presented. A significant focus was given to the thorny issue of potato cultivation, as well as the concerns raised by green bean farmers regarding production pricing.”
The meeting highlighted the reputation of the Maturata and Mandaramnuwara areas for green bean production. Farmers expressed difficulty in securing fair prices for their produce, leading to a precarious situation for those cultivating the beans. The rising costs associated with purchasing seeds were also a concern, placing additional strain on the farmers.
As a response to these challenges, the government intervened, urging the Department of Agriculture to formulate regulations aimed at ensuring fair pricing not only for bean seed producers but also for green bean growers, thus establishing an orderly mechanism to provide equitable access to quality seeds at reasonable prices.
Wijeratne concluded, “I believe the Agricultural Development Committee meeting on the 13th has fostered an environment conducive to addressing the real issues faced by farmers, leading to actionable solutions.” A significant number of participants, including representatives from various agricultural bodies and state institutions, attended the event, contributing to a comprehensive dialogue aimed at enhancing agricultural practices in the district.
