Monk Protests Erupt Outside Presidential Secretariat Demanding Release of Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero
A significant protest unfolded outside the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo as leading Buddhist monks intensified pressure on the government to secure the immediate release of Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero. The situation escalated rapidly, creating a tense atmosphere in the area.
Demonstrators attempted to erect a temporary shelter in the middle of Galle Road, leading police to intervene forcefully to prevent the blockage. This resulted in heated exchanges between the protesting monks and law enforcement officials.
Following this confrontation, police acted swiftly to dismantle the makeshift structure, although protestors later moved it to a nearby location, continuing their sit-in. This move allowed at least one lane of Galle Road to reopen for vehicular traffic.
During the protest, discussions took place between the monks and officials from the Presidential Secretariat regarding Gnanasara Thero's release; however, these talks concluded without any significant breakthrough. Officials indicated that a decision regarding the matter could take at least a month, a stance the monks expressed their unwillingness to accept.
While demanding Gnanasara Thero's liberation, the monks firmly stated they would not leave the Presidential Secretariat premises until an official and concrete statement was issued by the government. They pledged to persist with their peaceful demonstration, signaling their commitment to the cause.
This protest comes in the wake of previous appeals made by national organizations and the Buddhist clergy urging the government to grant presidential clemency to Gnanasara Thero, who has been imprisoned following a court ruling. The lack of a positive response from the government has prompted this direct action outside the Presidential Office.
