Ranil Wickremesinghe Highlights Sri Lanka's Need for a Competitive Economy at Webinar
Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe underscored the critical importance of establishing a strong competitive economy, warning that without such a foundation, Sri Lanka risks being sidelined in the evolving global power dynamics. His remarks came during the 50th webinar session of the Sri Lanka International Trade Council.
Referencing insights from Oxford Institute regarding global governance, he noted that it increasingly hinges on robust coalitions operating within a multi-centric framework. He emphasized that Sri Lanka must adapt to these changing geopolitical landscapes.
"Failure to do so will position us among the weaker players," Wickremesinghe asserted, calling for an economic and social transformation rooted in innovative practices that leverage technological advancement.
He elaborated on several key prerequisites for aligning with the new global power structure. These include transforming Sri Lanka into a maritime supply hub, fostering closer economic cooperation with India, strengthening ties with neighboring countries surrounding the Bay of Bengal, and enhancing relationships with major powers such as the United States, China, Russia, and Japan. Additionally, he stressed the necessity of expediting activities at the Colombo security base and developing a technologically advanced naval force equipped with medium and small naval vessels.
Wickremesinghe pointed out that the essence of sovereignty today lies in technology, highlighting its pivotal role in ensuring the nation’s future stability and growth.
