Revitalization of Lanka Sathosa: Fifty Out of 250 Outlets Now Profitable

After a prolonged period of significant losses, the Lanka Sathosa retail chain is witnessing a remarkable turnaround under the current administration, with 50 of its 250 outlets becoming profitable in the last two months. Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development, Wasantha Samarasinghe, announced that by December, the entire operation is expected to transition into a profitable state.

During a ceremony in Colombo, where permanent appointments were granted to 47 newly recruited employees, the minister highlighted the institution's ongoing recovery.

"By the time we take charge of Lanka Sathosa in 2024, it is projected that it will have an overall loss of 22 billion rupees. Some individuals claim I am responsible for these losses. However, the reality is that prior political leaders and former administrators are to blame for bringing Sathosa to this point. It was our government that managed to pull it back from a massive overdraft of 5.3 billion rupees. Our goal now is to completely end the era of losses by December and ensure it operates profitably," he emphasized.

Minister Samarasinghe identified political interference as a key factor in the recent struggles of Sathosa. He disclosed that previous ministers had taken goods for their personal use, even transporting them to their residences without charge. Additionally, he pointed out the unsuccessful operation of branches situated far from urban centers due to political patronage that burdened the institution.

He further stressed that those responsible for the demise of Sathosa in the past are now standing before courts and facing penalties as a consequence of their actions.

Commenting on the relationship with suppliers, the minister asserted that the era of treating Lanka Sathosa as a trash bin is over, stating that he has mandated the documentation of all suppliers who provide spoiled and substandard goods.

Emphasizing that Lanka Sathosa is not just another state institution, but a crucial mechanism by which the government controls commodity pricing against powerful private sector monopolies, he urged that the institution should be revamped to ensure that customers can access all daily necessities at fair prices under one roof. The minister also called on the new employees to fully commit to the revitalization efforts of the Sathosa brand.
