Concerns Raised Over Delay in Dengue Vaccine Importation Amidst Epidemic Risks
As Sri Lanka continues to grapple with the risk of another dengue outbreak, health authorities revealed plans to introduce a dengue vaccine to combat the disease. However, concerns are mounting as no steps have been taken to import the vaccine, according to Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa, the chairman of the Association of Medical and Civil Rights Physicians.
The standard price for a single dose of the dengue vaccine hovers around 50,000 Sri Lankan Rupees, and patients require two doses for complete immunization. This could result in expenses exceeding 100,000 Rupees if purchased through the private sector, he warned.
Dr. Sanjeewa noted that several countries around the globe are successfully using this vaccine to manage dengue cases among young children, emphasizing its efficacy.
Despite suppliers having sought approval from the National Medicine Regulatory Authority (NMRA) for importing the vaccine for years, delays in processing these approvals have hindered access for the private sector, he pointed out.
Consequently, Dr. Sanjeewa insists that the NMRA must expedite the approval process to ensure the availability of the vaccine through both public and private health systems before any potential dengue epidemic erupts again.
