Death of Young Man in Police Custody Sparks Outrage in Sri Lanka
A disturbing revelation has emerged from the post-mortem examination conducted at Kalubowila Teaching Hospital on a 29-year-old man who mysteriously died while in police custody at the Homagama Police Station. The examination found that his body exhibited severe trauma, including a broken neck and collarbone, alongside multiple lacerations on his head and other parts, indicating a brutal assault.
The victim, identified as Ishara, had been arrested by the Homagama Police on charges of possession of 490 milligrams of ice, a potent form of methamphetamine. Eyewitness accounts, along with a disturbing video circulating on social media, have fueled public outcry, showing him in distress prior to his death, alleging he was subjected to inhumane treatment and beatings by police officers.
During the examination, as the forensic pathologist explored the cause of death, authorities indicated that they would forward internal organs for further analysis by the government analyst. The young man's widow and relatives expressed their grief and fury at the hospital, claiming that police officers mercilessly beat Ishara for hours starting early in the morning.
“His neck is broken, his collarbone is shattered, and there are bruises all over his body. They showed no compassion while he screamed in pain. No one deserves such treatment, regardless of their mistakes. We demand immediate legal action against the police officers involved in this heinous crime,” she lamented, visibly shaken.
Lahiru Weerasekara, secretary of the organization Youth for Change, underscored the hypocrisy in the system that enforces strict jail sentences for civilians committing assaults, while police officers responsible for homicides seem to go unpunished. He demanded that the relevant officers, including the head of the homicide division at Homagama Police, be arrested and charged with murder.
In response to the situation, Minister of Public Security Tiran Alas called for an impartial and rapid investigation. The police headquarters has already initiated steps to suspend the officers involved, including those at the homicide division in Homagama. The minister further emphasized that law enforcement must itself be subject to the law, highlighting that over 1,200 officers have faced disciplinary actions for misconduct in the past two years, and nobody should escape legal repercussions in this case.
The Sri Lanka Bar Association has issued a stern statement expressing grave concern regarding the death under police custody, reaffirming that safeguarding the life and health of any individual in government custody is a fundamental and non-negotiable duty of the state. They have called for a transparent, impartial investigation into this matter.
Former Bar Association president President's Counsel Saliya Peiris took to social media to stress that the incident reaffirms the troubling trend of granting unchecked powers to law enforcement. He urged the need for ongoing oversight and strict regulation of arrests and detentions.
The death of detainees in custody due to beatings or during so-called “mandatory security operations” has already attracted significant attention from both local and international human rights organizations. The incident in Homagama has once again spotlighted the issue of police brutality, igniting debates on the need for urgent reforms in law enforcement practices in Sri Lanka.

I suspect this is another case of police brutality. How many more innocent people must die like this before this type of injustice is stopped?
