UNP Criticizes Government’s New Committee on Prison Attire for Monks
The United National Party (UNP) has described the government's decision to establish a committee aimed at providing guidelines on the dress code for incarcerated monks as a complete farce. This scrutiny comes as the authorities transport monks, currently imprisoned, to court.
In an official statement, the UNP asserts that all necessary legal protocols regarding this matter are already clearly outlined in the regulations of the Department of Prisons, thus rendering the formation of such a committee unnecessary.
Citing Section 550 of the Prisons Ordinance, the party emphasized that the law mandates a prisoner to present themselves in the official prison attire only when appearing before the court under a judicial order or during other legal proceedings.
Moreover, the regulations specify that inmates have the right to wear civilian clothes reflective of their social environment or garments appropriate to their religious and cultural backgrounds prior to their incarceration.
The UNP argues that the establishment of a committee under the pretense of proposing new recommendations appears to be a manipulative tactic aimed at diverting attention and procrastinating on the real issues at hand.
They further suggest that the government should address the pressing concerns rather than sidestepping them. The UNP calls for a formal apology from the relevant authorities, particularly from the senior clergy of the Siyam Maha Nikaya, regarding the decision taken against Venerable Galagodaththe Gnanasara Thero.
