Political Tensions Rise as Agricultural Organization Faces Interference Claims
A controversial phone conversation between the Chairman of the Divisional Farmers' Association and Deputy Minister T.B. Serath has surfaced on social media, sparking accusations of political interference in the governance of farmer organizations. This incident highlights the growing unease among farmers regarding political divisions undermining their unity.
During the recorded conversation, the Chairman revealed that despite being affiliated with the United National Party, he was appointed to lead the farmers' organization based on the unanimous agreement of the village farmers. This declaration underlined the collective voice of the agricultural community in the face of looming political influences.
However, he expressed concerns that factions representing the current government are attempting to hinder the operations of the farmers' organization and politically manipulate its management. His remarks reflect a significant concern that internal politics are encroaching on the agricultural sector, which is vital for the livelihoods of many Sri Lankans.
The Chairman stressed the importance of operating free from party affiliations, emphasizing that organizations like theirs should focus on advancing the welfare of farmers without the constraints of political agendas. He urged for a collaborative approach that allows farmers to act in their best interest, reinforcing a call for unity amidst political strife.
He further pointed out that officials previously accused of negligence should not be present in the organization, as their past actions have been rejected by the farmers. This insistence on accountability and transparency is pivotal for rebuilding trust within the agricultural community.
In response, Deputy Minister T.B. Serath acknowledged that if farmers have indeed appointed the Chairman, there should be no obstacles to his leadership. He asserted that he has no intention to disrupt the operations of the farmers’ organization or to exert political control over it.
Serath directed anyone with evidence of misconduct by officials to file formal complaints with relevant institutions, including the Department of Agricultural Services, ensuring that appropriate legal actions are taken against wrongdoings.
However, he clarified that under any government, the implementation of government projects and development programs is typically done through the political policies and subject ministers of the respective administration. This process, he noted, should not be misconstrued as political retribution or interference, but instead viewed as standard operational protocol.
