Relief Program Launched for Flood-Affected Homes in Puttalam District
A special program to distribute compensation cheques for fully and partially damaged homes in the Mahakumbukadawala Grama Niladhari division of the Puttalam district was inaugurated under the leadership of Minister of State Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Professor Chandana Abeyrathne. This initiative comes in the wake of the distress caused by the recent flooding.
The Minister highlighted that the current government has efficiently managed public tax revenues over the past year, allowing the treasury to accumulate savings. He noted that unlike previous administrations, the government has ensured that ongoing development projects remain on track, allocating a substantial portion of these savings for disaster relief efforts.
During the initial phase of the disaster response, the government provided immediate assistance by distributing food and beverages. Additionally, it allocated funds amounting to LKR 25,000 for cleaning homes, LKR 50,000 for replacement kitchen appliances, LKR 25,000 for schoolchildren, and LKR 25,000 as monthly support for temporary accommodations. The Minister emphasized that a comprehensive long-term relief plan for those who lost homes, crops, businesses, and livestock has also begun.
According to the Minister, the provision of disaster relief will not only benefit direct recipients but will also stimulate the overall rural economy. He pointed out that funding for home reconstruction will create income opportunities for numerous suppliers of sand and concrete blocks, masons and carpenters, hardware vendors, electricians, and transport service providers, extending to local vegetable and fish vendors.
He urged that the relief funds, sourced from public money, must solely be utilized for housing construction and repairs, and not for any unrelated expenses. Furthermore, he assured that the construction activities would be closely monitored by divisional secretaries, village officers, engineers, and public representatives, with funds released in installments to ensure accountability.
This event was attended by several local dignitaries, including the Chairperson of the Anamaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha, Aloka Bandara, the Additional District Secretary of Puttalam, and various government officials and residents of the area.
