Prime Minister Urges Immediate Action to Address Road Development Delays in Colombo

In a bid to overcome development delays attributed to the scarcity of tar and carpet, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has instructed officials to pursue the use of concrete or interlocking stones as alternatives in road construction. This initiative aims to mitigate potential flooding risks during heavy rains expected in the next two months while ensuring that clearing work on Colombo's canal routes proceeds without institutional obstacles.

These directives were presented during a meeting of the Colombo District Planning Committee held at the Colombo District Secretary's office, chaired by the Prime Minister.

The meeting also included assessments of the progress of development projects being implemented by local administrative offices and provincial governance institutions within the Colombo District.

Officials discussing rural road development projects within the Colombo District highlighted challenges arising from the lack of tar and carpet, which has hindered the completion of several routes.

Member of Parliament Lakshman Nipunarachchi emphasized that the public is consistently urging the use of carpet over concrete in road repairs. "The people's preference leans towards carpet. They say it's aesthetically pleasing once it's laid out properly," he noted.

Responding, Prime Minister Amarasuriya questioned, "Why can't we put a white coating over the concrete?" indicating a willingness to explore viable solutions beyond traditional methods.

She underscored the need to expedite road development through alternative methodologies and to keep the public informed about ongoing efforts.

Given the anticipated heavy rainfall in the coming months, the Prime Minister stressed the urgent requirement to prioritize the cleanliness of canal paths to avert inundation in Colombo and surrounding areas.

A debate emerged among officials regarding the responsibility for maintaining canal routes, whether to the Provincial Irrigation Department or the Department of Agriculture. The Prime Minister emphasized that organizations must collaborate and take immediate action to clean the canal paths, avoiding finger-pointing over responsibilities and ownership.

She reiterated that the failure to timely clean these paths must not result in unnecessary hardship for the public.
