Former Minister and Coal Company Chairman Testify at Presidential Commission

In a significant development concerning alleged irregularities in coal transactions in Sri Lanka, former Minister of Power and Energy Kumar Jayakody, along with former Chairman of the Lanka Coal Company, President's Counsel Maithri Gunaratne, appeared before the Presidential Commission on Thursday, the 23rd.

Diving deep into the allegations of coal-related malpractices, the former minister, alongside his legal advisor, presented comprehensive details regarding the subject matter to safeguard his interests during the proceedings.

Recently, the Commission has issued summoning notices to 18 key individuals linked to coal import and supply deals; however, reports suggest that only two individuals have requested extensions to present their cases further.

Additionally, the Commission questioned President's Counsel Maithri Gunaratne intensively for over three hours on the same day concerning the relevant transactions, meticulously documenting his statements.

This commission was established by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to thoroughly investigate the alleged financial irregularities and corrupt practices associated with coal procurement.

Headed by Supreme Court Justice Gihan Kulatunga, the three-member Commission includes Appeals Court Justice Aditya Patabendige and High Court Justice Sanjeewa Somaratne as its other members.

The final report, summarizing the findings after thorough evidence examination, is expected to be officially submitted to the President in the first week of next month.

Accusations have been rampant about colossal financial losses to the government due to procurement processes conducted outside of tender procedures and at substantially inflated prices at the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Power Plant.

Following the establishment of the new government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, an independent judicial inquiry was initiated to investigate extensive corruption and fraud within the energy sector, leading to the formation of this special Presidential Commission aimed at ensuring accountability among wrongdoers.
