Impending Rainfall Due to Strengthening El Niño, Warns Meteorological Department
As the formidable El Niño condition intensifies, Sri Lanka is bracing for significantly heavier rainfall over the coming months, with potential for flash floods due to sudden, intense downpours. The warning was issued by the Director General of the Meteorological Department, L.K. Wijemanna, during a media briefing.
He emphasized a common misconception that El Niño impacts only long-term weather patterns. In reality, it can also lead to reduced rainfall during the southwest monsoon, followed by a marked increase in precipitation during the secondary inter-monsoon months of October and November. Typically, around 30% of the country’s annual rainfall occurs during these two months, a figure that could soar further this year due to the effects of El Niño, he explained.
Furthermore, the Director General highlighted that under these conditions, there is a heightened risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall occurring in short bursts.
Looking ahead, the forecast for December predicts above-average rainfall in many regions of the island, while the northern and eastern provinces are expected to experience normal precipitation levels. Following January, a dry spell is anticipated, with the months of February, March, and April potentially bringing periods of severe heat.
In addition, the Director General noted a significant risk of low-pressure systems and turbulent weather phenomena, such as squalls, developing in the Bay of Bengal during the secondary inter-monsoon period. He urged both the public and relevant authorities to remain vigilant regarding upcoming weather advisories and warnings.
