Minister Warns of Legal Action Against Fuel Distribution Firms for Price Hikes
In a firm response to concerns about fuel prices, Minister of Power and Energy Anura Yapa Karunaratne has underscored the government's commitment to protecting consumers amid soaring global oil prices. He intends to impose strict legal measures against private fuel distribution companies that attempt to artificially limit supply in order to raise prices.
Addressing the media, the Minister acknowledged that there has been significant public discourse surrounding a proposed ten-rupee increase in fuel prices. However, he pointed out a noticeable lack of attention towards the substantial subsidies of seventy-five rupees being provided by the government to offset these increases.
While global fuel prices have risen considerably compared to February of this year, Karunaratne confirmed that the government has ensured local prices do not reflect this rise in full measure, shouldering a considerable portion of the cost. He disclosed that the government had previously allocated 57 billion rupees for fuel subsidies, with an additional 41 billion rupees set aside for the next three months.
The Minister emphasized that the burden passed onto consumers remains minimal, as the government is absorbing a significant portion of the increased costs from global markets. He indicated that private companies have been informed of the necessity to manage their pricing strategies responsibly under these challenging conditions.
Despite these assurances, Karunaratne noted attempts by some private fuel stations to restrict supply as a means to pressure the government into allowing price hikes. He stated that while these companies might seek to establish pricing based on contractual formulas, they must not cause undue hardship to the public through artificial supply limitations.
If these companies persist in such tactics, the government will not hesitate to take all necessary legal actions, including revoking their licenses. The Minister reiterated that the inclusion of the private sector in the market should foster competition and benefit consumers, rather than creating monopolistic pressures that exacerbate public distress.
