Opposition Withdraws No-Confidence Motion Against Speaker Jagath Vikramarathne

In a significant development, the opposition has decided to withdraw the no-confidence motion against Speaker Dr. Jagath Vikramarathne, which was previously submitted to Parliament.

This motion included provisions that could potentially interfere with ongoing court cases and judicial proceedings. As a result, the government has already notified the opposition to amend these points before resubmitting the proposal.

The current move to remove the motion from the parliamentary order paper follows this notification.

However, the opposition maintains that there are no clauses within the proposal that would affect judicial proceedings or court cases.

Reports suggest that the opposition has no plans to revise and resubmit the proposal due to its contents.

While there had been an earlier decision in the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Affairs to refer the proposal to the Attorney General to ascertain if it included matters relevant to ongoing judicial cases, it has yet to be sent to the Attorney General as of now.

In the meantime, the government party has questioned why the no-confidence motion was submitted without removing matters that could impact judicial processes. In response, the Secretary General of Parliament clarified that no items in the proposal would obstruct related court cases.

The ongoing dispute between the two parties has delayed any further discussion on the no-confidence motion against the Speaker. Recently, Ajith P. Perera, a parliamentarian from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, emphasized in Parliament that the motion includes serious allegations against the Speaker, and the government should not be allowed to sidestep the discourse on this matter.

In a related inquiry, Janakantha de Silva, the parliamentary secretary, acknowledged that the proposal does indeed contain points that affect ongoing judicial cases.

This no-confidence motion, formally submitted to the Attorney General by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, was included in the parliamentary records as of October 12, with reference number 04.
