IMF Projects Decline in Sri Lanka's Economic Growth Over Next Two Years
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has forecasted a significant downturn in Sri Lanka's economic growth over the coming two years, as outlined in its latest World Economic Outlook report. The projections indicate a stark decline in the country's real Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is expected to fall from 5.0% in 2025 to 4.0% in 2026, and further to 3.7% by 2027.
Alongside this anticipated drop in economic expansion, the report highlights several critical vulnerabilities facing the Sri Lankan economy. Inflation, measured by consumer prices, is projected to increase from a contraction of 0.5% in 2025 to 5.3% in 2026, hitting 5.4% in 2027. Such rising costs could exacerbate the strain on living expenses for citizens.
Additionally, the IMF notes that the country's current account balance will show a surplus of 1.6% of GDP in 2025, but this will trend into deficits of 0.5% and 0.3% in 2026 and 2027, respectively. Unemployment rates are expected to remain stable at around 3.9% throughout the period.
The report emphasizes the pressures faced by developing nations reliant on fuel imports, like Sri Lanka, which are being acutely affected by escalating global energy prices amid geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East. Rising import costs, impacts on exchange rates, limited fiscal space, and a heavy debt burden are collectively presenting significant challenges to maintaining economic stability.
Furthermore, the IMF underscores the urgency of providing genuine support mechanisms that target the most vulnerable segments of the population rather than implementing temporary aid systems. This proactive approach is crucial in mitigating the adverse effects of rising prices for essential goods and fuel on low-income families while ensuring fiscal discipline.
