Sri Lanka's Electricity Prices Highest in South Asia
In a recent report by SenFin Securities, a leading investment firm, Sri Lanka has been identified as the country with the highest residential electricity tariffs in South Asia, when compared to neighboring countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Despite this distinction, the report highlights that Sri Lanka's commercial electricity rates are among the lowest globally, providing a competitive advantage for local exporters in the international market.
Titled ‘SenFin – Sri Lanka Electricity Generation Review’, the comprehensive study reveals several key findings. The average price of a residential electricity unit (measured in kilowatt-hours) in Sri Lanka stands at approximately $0.116. This figure significantly overshadows rates in neighboring countries, with India at $0.077, Pakistan at $0.064, and Bangladesh at $0.062.
Consequently, the cost borne by the average consumer in Sri Lanka is nearly double that of residential customers in Pakistan and Bangladesh. However, the report notes that the global average for residential electricity prices is around $0.174, indicating that Sri Lanka’s rates remain comparatively lower on the international stage.
While residential electricity prices may raise concern, Sri Lanka boasts remarkably low rates for commercial and industrial users, placing it among the most favorable in Asia and worldwide. The average commercial electricity cost here is just $0.091, in contrast to $0.123 in India, $0.154 in Pakistan, and $0.100 in Bangladesh.
Set against a backdrop of a global average commercial electricity cost of $0.164, Sri Lanka’s low rates are seen as a significant stimulus for local manufacturers and exporters, allowing them to minimize production costs, according to SenFin Securities.
