Former Minister Calls for Transparency in Fuel Pricing Mechanism
Patali Champika Ranawaka, a former minister, has insisted on the immediate disclosure of the formula and basis used by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to determine prices for locally refined diesel and petrol. He underlined the importance of transparency in the context of the ongoing fuel crisis in the country.
In a post on his social media account, Ranawaka highlighted the situation using international pricing indicators, specifically the 'Singapore Platts', to shed light on the significant costs associated with fuel imports.
According to data presented by the former minister, the international prices of fuel as of October 30 reflect substantial values:
- Price of a barrel of diesel: USD 162 (equating to approximately LKR 336 per litre of refined diesel)
- Price of a barrel of Octane 92 petrol: USD 138 (equating to approximately LKR 280 per litre of refined petrol)
- Price of a barrel of Brent crude oil: USD 114.
From these price indicators, Ranawaka suggests that the cost of importing crude oil and refining it at the Sapugaskanda facility results in an expenditure of about LKR 236 per litre. He questions how the retail prices in the local market have escalated to such high levels under these circumstances.
Ranawaka has called on the current government to provide a clear statement to the public regarding the actual production costs, taxes, and distribution expenses related to domestically produced fuels, emphasizing the need for clarity and accountability in fuel pricing practices.
