Fuel Prices Could Soar Past Rs. 700 Without Government Intervention, Warns Deputy Minister

Amid ongoing global conflicts and a tumultuous market environment, Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne revealed that petrol prices in Sri Lanka could rise beyond Rs. 700 per liter if another government were in power.

In statements to the media regarding the recent fuel price adjustment, Karunaratne emphasized that the government has shouldered a massive financial burden to alleviate the pressure of escalating global fuel prices on consumers in the country.

Highlighting the need for necessary financial provisions to minimize the impact of rising fuel prices on the economy and the daily lives of the public, he noted that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has taken steps to present additional budget estimates to Parliament.

Karunaratne acknowledged the hardships faced by the agricultural community and the general populace due to the recent fuel price hike, affirming that the government is aware of the challenges encountered by citizens. He pointed out that maintaining current price levels further strains the government’s financial resources.

He also expressed confidence that discussions within the upcoming budget document would lead to necessary changes in tax policies and economic sectors to provide relief to the public.
